SURFING STORMY SEAS: PROMOTING AND PROTECTING EMOTIONAL HEALTH FOR BOYS AND YOUNG MEN

Course Description:

You know that male youth face intense emotions and are forced to deal with difficult situations. This course will offer you tools and techniques to better connect with them. Understanding their emotional language can be very challenging; this three-week workshop goes beyond stereotypes and generalities and will allow you to chart a course toward acknowledgment and understanding of male youth.

Week 1:
Talk to the Heart-Brain: Biology, Power, and Communication
Topics:
o  The Misuse of Power
o  Initiating Conversations
o  Brain Science and Males

Week 2:
X-ray Vision: Seeing Through the Walls:

Topics:
o  Freeing Boys from Anxiety
o  Responding to Masked Anxiety
o  Shy Kids: Nurturing Spidersense

Week 3
Lecture—Wave Riders: Learning to Surf

Topics:
o  Regulating Emotions at Home
o  Regulating Emotions at School
o  Managing Stress

About the Instructor (back by popular demand):

Joshua Koepp, an experienced online instructor, has 17 years of professional experience serving children, youth and families in School Age Care programs,YMCA family camps and faith communities including 7 years as a program supervisor. He is a certified parent coach, a Minnesota School Age Care Association certified trainer, and has achieved the master trainer level with the Minnesota Center for Professional Development.  As a consultant for the Center for Inclusive Child Care helps providers successfully include children with special needs. Joshua currently teaches classes at Minneapolis Community and Technical College for the Child Development, Education, and First Year Student Transition departments. He has taught continuing education courses for Concordia University St. Paul since 1994. Mastery and professionalism are his personal goals as well as his goals for learners.
